Wesam is an architect and a doctoral researcher at the Centre for Natural Material Innovation. His work investigates how tile-vaulting responses to different forms of scarcities. Through design, making, and case studies in Cuba, Spain, and Syria, he examines how technology, manufacturing, and craft training in tile-vaulting can be facilitators of locally resourced construction during economic hardship, emergency, and post-war reconstruction. Wesam leads IW-lab, his cofounded practice in Damascus, Syria. IW-lab investigates the manifestation of craft in architecture, working on developing programs for construction and craft training specifically in contexts of the everyday informal and self-construction. Wesam is a consultant in Emergency Architecture and Human Rights (EAHR), and a lecturer at Master program in Emergency and Resilience at the Venice school of architecture (IUAV).

Wesam's research includes vocational training, construction, craft and heritage in contexts of migration. Wesam also looks at design and construction of classrooms for refugees, research that is being developed by Emergency Architecture and Human Rights (EAHR) through their project "100 Classrooms for refugees in the Middle East and North Africa"
